The Chapel of “San Juan de Gaztelugatxe” in Bermeo (https://turismovasco.com), is dedicated to San Juan Bautista (St. John Baptist) and it is located in the surroundings of Urdaibai reserve (http://www.turismourdaibai.com/). Due to its strategic location, it has developed an important role in diverse historic events. It was looted in different occasions and after suffering a big fire, it was reinaugurated on June 25th, 1980.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most traditional places and of mandatory visit in the Basque Country, either for local or foreign tourists. Due to the beauty of its landscape, it was chosen as one of the settings for the 7th season of “The Game of Thrones” series.
Following this, the number of visitors significantly raised (only in July 2016 received 75.000 visitors, 2.419 per day), forcing the Council (http://web.bizkaia.eus/es/) to control the flow for safety reasons and preservation of the chapel.
